What We Build
A deck is the part of the house
people actually use.
It also takes more weather than anything else you own. We have been building in Northumberland County for 25 years, and decks are straightforward work for crews who frame houses. That means we can usually get to them faster than a larger project, and price them properly rather than padding for uncertainty.

What It Costs
Around $50 a square foot
That covers materials, framing, footings, railings and labour. What moves the number is height above grade, whether guards and stairs are needed, the decking material, and whether there is a roof.
$10k
200 sq ft
A small ground level deck. The simplest build, often no guards required, usually a few days on site once materials are in.
$20k
400 sq ft
A full size deck off the back of the house. Guards and stairs included, and the point at which decking material starts to move the price meaningfully.
$30k
600 sq ft, raised
Raised or second storey. Deeper footings, engineered beam sizing, guards and a full staircase. Most of the cost is below the boards.
$40k
800 sq ft
A large multi level deck, or a deck with a covered section. Roofed structures need their own load path down to footings and usually a permit.

What actually lasts
01
Pressure Treated
The most common choice and the most affordable. Needs cleaning and re-sealing every couple of years to stay looking right. Built correctly on proper footings, it will serve you well for a long time.
02
Composite
Costs more at the start. No staining, no sealing, no splinters, and it holds its colour. If you do not want to be maintaining a deck in ten years, this is the reason people choose it.
03
Cedar
Looks the best of the three and weathers to grey unless it is sealed. Sits between the other two on price, and suits heritage properties where composite would look wrong.
04
The Frame
Whichever surface goes on top, the frame underneath is pressure treated, the footings go below the frost line, and the fasteners are rated for exterior use. That is what decides whether the deck is still solid in twenty years.

Why Cobourg Construction
We are a general contractor, not a deck company.
That matters in two ways. Our framing crews build houses, so a deck frame is routine work for people who frame structures, and it gets built to the same standard.
And if the deck turns out to be part of something bigger, a porch tie-in, a door that needs moving, a walkout that needs the grade changed, we can do all of it rather than handing you to someone else halfway through.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the best deck builders in Cobourg?
We would point you at three things rather than a name. Ask to see decks they have built that are more than five years old, not just finished last month. Ask whether the quote is fixed or an estimate. And ask what is happening below the boards: footing depth, beam sizing, fastener type. Cobourg Construction has been building here since 1999 and will answer all three in writing before you commit to anything.
How much does a deck cost in Cobourg?
Most decks work out around $50 per square foot, so roughly $10,000 for a small ground level deck and around $30,000 for a larger raised one. Height, stairs, railings and decking material are what move the number.
How much does a 12×16 deck cost?
That is 192 square feet, so around $9,500 to $10,000 at ground level. A raised version of the same deck costs more because of the footings, guards and stairs.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Cobourg?
Usually yes. A permit is required if the deck is attached to the house, if any walking surface sits more than 600 mm above grade, or if a freestanding deck is larger than about 10 square metres. Any porch requires a permit in Cobourg. Guards are required where the walking surface is more than 24 inches above grade. We confirm what applies to your property and handle the application.
How long does it take to build a deck?
A straightforward ground level deck is typically a few days on site once materials are in. Raised decks with stairs and railings take longer, and a covered porch longer again because of the roof and the tie-in. We give you a schedule before we start.
Composite or pressure treated?
Pressure treated costs less and needs cleaning and sealing every couple of years. Composite costs more up front and needs almost nothing afterwards. If you plan to be in the house ten years or more, composite usually wins on total cost. If budget is the constraint, pressure treated built properly will serve you well.
Can you repair my existing deck instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. Sometimes the frame is sound and only the surface has gone, which is a much smaller job. Sometimes the boards look fine over joists that are finished. We will tell you which you have before quoting either.
Do you build covered porches?
Yes. A roof means tying into the existing structure and carrying the load properly down to footings, and in Cobourg any porch requires a building permit. It is more involved than an open deck, but it turns the space into somewhere you use in more than three months of the year.
Why does what is underneath matter more than what is on top?
Because you can replace decking. You cannot easily replace a frame or fix footings that were not taken below frost line. Ground here freezes and moves, and a deck on shallow footings will shift, then rack, then need pulling apart. The visible part is a finish. The rest is structure.
Do you build decks outside Cobourg?
Yes. Across Northumberland County including Port Hope, Baltimore, Grafton, Colborne and Brighton, and into Clarington, Trenton and Peterborough.
